My son, who is an Army medic, was informed today that he's getting papers to go to Afghanistan in December. They will start training in November. It seems so far away but I'm a mother and already I'm desperately worried. Because we will be withdrawing all our troops in a year, we will not leave any thing behind so we are mobilizing engineering units to do just that. And those units need medics. Mathew is a senior NCO now and will have a great deal of responsibility over there. He doesn't want me to worry but he's my son, so of course I'll worry.

Things could change. He might not go or they could speed things up and he'll be over there much sooner. Right now it's a hurry up and wait period. We'll help him start to get everything in order before he goes as it's a nine month mission.
